Electric Bass Guitars
There are many people who think perhaps the
electric bass guitar is the one instrument in a live band that
perhaps the band could do without.
I have to argue, and I don’t do this just because
I happen to know a few bass players and think they are wonderful.
Even though there aren’t a lot of bass solos in a rock band,
the band may very well fall apart without the bass. You may not
even be able to pick up very easily what the bass player is playing,
but I assure you, you’d miss it if it where gone.
Also, some modern music features keyboard bass or
loops featuring the electric bass and I must say - while better
than no bass at all it really does not do most tracks justice.
You need the constantly changing and evolving inflection that a
real live bass player adds to the music to keep tracks alive and
interesting. I think so at least...
The electric bass guitar plays much lower than a regular
guitar and has four strings as apposed to six. There are some
models that have five strings, but there are also some guitars
that have seven strings. If I were to start going in the different
variations on an electric bass guitar or a regular guitar we could
be here for hours. For the most part there are four stings, but
those four stings make a great big noise.
The electric bass guitar helps to lay the foundation
to a song. They often play in accordance to the drums and the guitar
and vocals smoothly flow over the top of this. Think about a house
without a foundation. It might look pretty but what happens to
this house? It’s going to fall down. You can’t have
a house without a foundation and you can’t have a good band
sound with the electric bass guitar. You can try, but you are going
to find your music lacks substance and depth.
The notes played by an electric bass guitar are often
low and steady. They have a rich tone that compliments the rest
of the band. Some bass players are steady and sparse while other
players like to do complicated fills. What you find will depend
on the band and of course will depend on the personality of the
person playing the electric bass guitar. Before you go out and
say bass players are expendable and perhaps not as talented as
the rest of the band, try to have a great band without one. You
will find that this is next to impossible. Perhaps it’s hard
to appreciate something that isn’t jumping out at you. You
may never know the bass is there until or unless it is suddenly
missing. Then you will most definitely know something just isn’t
right.
